What DIY cannot do is reach the infill layer, the sand and granules under the blades where bacteria and uric acid crystals actually live. Used on an already-contaminated yard, it mostly just wakes the contamination up.
What Vinegar and Baking Soda Actually Do

- Blow or sweep leaves and debris off the surface so they never decompose into the infill.
- Brush flattened blades upright in high-traffic lanes with a stiff broom.
- Move furniture and planters seasonally so the turf underneath gets air and light.
Do those consistently and you will stretch the time between professional visits and keep the yard presentable year-round. That is the honest DIY win, and it is worth doing.
Where DIY Tops Out: The Infill Layer
Everything above happens at the blade level. The problems that make turf smell bad, drain slowly, and feel hard underfoot all happen below it, in the infill.
Crystallized urine. Uric acid crystals bond to the infill grains and the turf backing. No hose, spray, or household product removes them. They sit dormant until heat or moisture triggers them, then release ammonia. Breaking them down requires an oxidizer like hydrogen peroxide applied at the right concentration, with enough volume and dwell time to reach the backing layer.
Bacteria and biofilm. Bacteria feed on urine residue and organic debris trapped in the infill, and over time they form a mat between the infill grains and the backing. You cannot see it from above and you cannot reach it from above. It produces its own odor on top of the ammonia, which is why yards that get rinsed religiously can still smell.
Compaction and matting. Infill packs down under Vegas heat and foot traffic. Once it hardens, drainage slows, blades flatten, and the yard holds moisture longer after every rinse, which feeds more bacteria. Loosening and extracting a compacted layer takes power brushing and vacuum extraction, not a garden rake.
The Cost Math: Buying Tools vs Booking a Visit
Some homeowners look at that list and think the answer is to buy better equipment. Here is what that route actually costs.
A consumer power broom runs typically $150 to $400.
