If a strip of your artificial turf has turned brown, shriveled, or hard along one side of the yard, and it lines up with a window or glass patio door, you are almost certainly looking at reflection melt. Energy-efficient low-E windows can bounce and concentrate sunlight into a beam hot enough to melt turf fibers, and in Las Vegas that beam has the strongest sun in the country behind it. The damage is permanent, but it is repairable, and the fix costs far less than most homeowners expect once the reflection itself is handled.
Here is how a window melts a lawn, how to tell melt from ordinary wear, and the right order of operations to fix it so it never happens again.
How a Window Melts a Lawn
Turf blades are made of polyethylene or polypropylene. Those plastics start to soften around 175 degrees and melt near 200. Direct Vegas sun pushes a turf surface to 140 to 160 degrees in July. Brutally hot, but still below the melting point. Direct sunlight alone does not melt quality turf.
Reflected sunlight is a different story. Low-E (low emissivity) windows carry a microscopic metallic coating that reflects infrared energy instead of letting it heat the house. Great for your power bill. The problem is where that reflected energy goes. Modern double-pane windows are sealed units, and as outdoor temperature and pressure shift, the glass bows slightly inward. A flat mirror becomes a shallow concave mirror, and a concave mirror focuses light. The window stops scattering sunlight and starts concentrating it into a bright band on whatever sits in front of it.
Surface temperatures measured inside these reflection zones have exceeded 200 degrees. Low-E reflections have melted vinyl siding, warped trash bins, and scorched living plants across the Southwest. Turf fibers, with a melting point sitting right at that mark, do not stand a chance. And Las Vegas is close to the worst-case scenario: intense sun, cloudless skies, energy codes that put low-E glass on nearly every home built or re-windowed in the last two decades, and small lots that press turf right up against walls full of windows.
The beam also moves. As the sun angle changes through the day and the season, the reflected band sweeps across the yard. That is why the damage usually shows up as a streak, arc, or crescent instead of a neat rectangle, and why it often appears suddenly in late spring or early summer, the first week the angle finally lines up with your turf.
Melt or Wear: How to Tell the Difference
Melted turf and worn turf can look similar from the patio. Up close, they separate fast.
Feel the blades. Melted fibers fuse together, curl at the tips, and feel hard, crunchy, or slightly glassy. Worn fibers are flattened but still soft, and each blade stays separate.
Look at the shape. Reflection melt forms a defined band or crescent, usually within a few feet of a wall, and it mirrors the geometry of a window. Wear follows traffic: gate paths, play zones, the route the dog runs along the fence.
Run the brush test. Work a stiff broom against the grain. Worn blades lift and at least partially stand back up. Melted blades stay fused flat and can flake or crackle under the bristles.
Check the timing. Wear builds gradually all year. Reflection melt appears or spreads during a specific stretch of the calendar, usually late spring through summer, then stops growing once the sun angle moves on.
Two more look-alikes worth ruling out. Round scorch marks right next to the barbecue are grill damage, not reflection. And a dull, discolored patch is sometimes nothing but embedded desert dust: a professional turf cleaning restores color on dirty turf but changes nothing on melted fibers, which is itself a useful diagnosis.
Find the Source Before You Fix Anything
Repairing the turf without stopping the reflection is a subscription to the same repair every summer. So the first job is tracing the beam. Stand at the damaged spot during the hours it gets sun, look for a bright band of light on the surface, then follow it back to the glass. The usual culprits:
- Your own windows and glass patio doors, especially on south- and west-facing walls
- A neighbor's second-story windows looking down into your yard
- Metal roof edges, gutters, or the frames of solar panels
- Glass pool fencing
- Polished patio furniture, mirrored decor, or a stainless grill hood
If the patch gets its sun at 4 pm, the check has to happen at 4 pm. The beam only exists at the angle that created the damage. Stopping the Reflection
Exterior solar screens. The most reliable fix. A screen mounted over the offending window diffuses sunlight before it ever reaches the glass, so there is no concentrated beam left to reflect. As a bonus, the screen cuts the heat load on that room.
Anti-reflective window film. Exterior films made for this exact problem (often sold as turf-safe or vinyl-safe film) scatter the reflection instead of letting the bowed glass focus it. It goes on the outside of the window, not the inside.
Shade between the glass and the turf. An awning, shade sail, patio cover, or a well-placed tree or shrub interrupts the beam path. This option works even when the window is not yours.
If the window belongs to a neighbor, a solar screen on their window is still the standard fix. Most neighbors agree once they see what their glass is doing, because the same screen lowers their cooling bill.
What we do not recommend is swapping in a section of high-temperature turf and calling it solved. Heat-resistant fibers buy you margin, but a focused reflection can exceed what any turf product is rated for. Kill the beam first.
Repairing the Melted Section
Melted fibers do not recover. Once the plastic fuses, no amount of brushing, cleaning, or infill work brings the blades back. The fix is a standard Turf Repair visit: cut out the damaged band, match the turf as closely as possible in blade height and color, and seam the new piece into place. Done well, the patch blends into the surrounding lawn and costs a fraction of replacing the yard.
The order matters. Screen or film first, patch second. A new patch installed under a live reflection melts on schedule the following summer.
